What is natural is not always beneficial for skin health

Skincare is trending and digital platforms abound with a wealth of information about the best ways to preserve your complexion. Complete routines, star ingredients and masks with products of natural origin can be found on the Internet, but you have to know to what extent it is healthy –or convenient– to apply methods that are not personalized.

"Unlike all the information we can get on networks where great benefits are promised by applying natural products, oils and others to our skin, the truth is that many times 'natural' does not necessarily mean 'beneficial,'" explained Dr. Raquel Carolina Cohen.

The specialist stated that the skin has a skin barrier, where not all ingredients and concentrations are welcome. It is very different, for example, to use a caffeinated cream than to spread coffee directly around the eyes.

Despite the fact that references to its therapeutic properties abound in the networks, it is not a good idea to apply certain products to the dermis, says Cohen. The first of these is lemon, because it alters the pH of the skin and destroys the protective barrier, which can cause burns, irritations and blemishes. Uncooked egg white is also counted, since its use carries a great risk of infection by salmonella, a bacterium of which it is a means of transmission and that is capable of causing serious food poisoning if it is ingested.

Lo natural no siempre es beneficioso para la salud de la piel

There are those who resort to alcohol to treat pimples on the face, but this destroys the lipids, proteins and essential oils for skin protection. Its use carries risks of inflammation. For its part, coffee could be linked to eye problems such as conjunctivitis and keratitis, by coming into contact with the conjunctiva. This is thanks to the fact that it has a dehydrating effect, just like sodium and alcohol.

Sodium bicarbonate and toothpaste are also among the elements used as a remedy, but they are capable of modifying the pH of the skin and producing greater susceptibilities.

Specialized care

“All this applies if you have healthy skin, but imagine that you also want to improve pathologies such as rosacea or acne. Your skin in these cases is much more sensitive, it may have abraded or open lesions, which when in contact with these ingredients can lead to an infection, irritate or worsen the condition”, highlighted the specialist in medical, surgical and aesthetic dermatology.

She added that the previously mentioned are skin diseases, whose evolution must be closely followed. Dermatologists are the ones trained to solve and avoid possible complications. "The next time you go to the market and want to choose products to make a homemade mask, think better and choose foods that nourish you and provide benefits for your skin and health in general from its consumption," said the expert, who works in the Hospital de Clínicas Caracas, in the capital city.
