The Official College of Pharmacists of Tarragona (COFT) has finished this Tuesday, November 30, the course 'Approach to pediatric patients from the pharmacy', aimed at community pharmacists in the demarcation of Tarragona. Nearly 40 professionals have participated, in person and online, in this training dedicated to updating knowledge and obtaining tools to address in their daily work queries regarding the pediatric population, very frequent in community pharmacies.
The course, which began on October 27 and developed over six weeks with a weekly theoretical-practical session, has served to delve into the most common situations that affect pediatric patients. The objective has been to obtain techniques to deal responsibly and rigorously, as health agents close to the population, issues specifically related to general minor symptoms, dermatology, respiratory symptoms, vaccines, breastfeeding, infant feeding, allergies and food intolerances.
Among the general minor symptoms, pharmacists have received training on colic, baby teething and oral hygiene, cough and runny nose, conjunctivitis, fever, sleep regulation, minor trauma such as falls, decomposition, and jaundice. Regarding dermatology, the most common skin conditions have also been treated, basic baby care, skin care with pathologies or skin disorders, the use of mosquito repellents and sunscreens.
The course also included a session dedicated to the most frequent infectious respiratory diseases, respiratory physiotherapy, allergies with pulmonary symptoms, rhinitis, inhalers and nasal washes. Also, a module has been allocated to the vaccination schedule, periodic reviews of the child population and ways to boost the immune system.

Another area developed has been exclusive and mixed breastfeeding, as well as the general recommendations, physiology and benefits it provides. On the other hand, infant feeding has been deepened with nutritional recommendations for the first years of life (0-3 years), complementary feeding, artificial breastfeeding and diet therapy. Related to food, the course ended this Tuesday with a session on food hypersensitivity and allergies, specifically anaphylaxis, diagnostic tests in pediatric allergology and their treatment.
This multidisciplinary training has had the participation of a dozen speakers with extensive professional experience in pediatric medicine, nursing, dermatology, allergology and immunology, clinical analysis, respiratory physiotherapy, human nutrition and dietetics. The organization of the course, which has been able to be followed in person and also online, has been possible thanks to the Department of Promotion and Teaching, the Pharmacy Office, Associates and Dermopharmacy of the COFT.
