Face oils are nothing new in skin care. It is a star product that is in all the collections of recognized and independent brands. But if you're still not sure how to select the best facial oil for your skin, you're not alone.
Those with oily or acne-prone skin may be especially wary of facial oils, as they are often greasy. But, according to Sarah Akram, celebrity esthetician and owner of Sarah Akram Skincare, there's a facial oil for everyone. It all comes down to the type of oil in the formula and the ingredients it contains.
“Face oils are emollients, which means they soothe the skin. Its main benefit is obviously hydration, which is very important especially in the colder seasons”, explains Akram. “The key is choosing the right oil that complements the natural oils you already produce. Squalane, jojoba, and rosehip are among the most popular because they mimic the natural oils in our skin."
So, which facial oil to choose based on your skin type? Akram reveals the best face oil for any skin type.
For normal skin, it is highly recommended to apply a facial oil with vitamin C during the day, a natural lightener to combat free radicals and brighten the complexion. Akram also recommends vitamin A and D rich face oils for combination and normal skin types.
While richer oils may work well for dry skin, they may be too heavy for oily or acne-prone skin types, resulting in clogging of pores and the appearance of blemishes. Jojoba oil rich in vitamin E is an excellent alternative according to Akram. "[Jojoba oil] is similar to sebum on the skin and doesn't clog."
For the driest skin types, passion fruit oil is at the top of Akram's list, thanks to its light yet hydrating formula and because it's Packed with shine-enhancing vitamin C.
Vitamin A, better known in the skin care world as retinol, is an anti-aging essential at night, so look for face oils that list vitamin A on the label. If you're new to using retinol, Akram especially recommends vitamin A in oil form, as it's generally non-irritating.
