Makeup, an evolution hand in hand with history

Humanity's evolutionary paths have been mysterious, but everything has an explanation. Male animals must look prettier, bigger and more attractive to get females.

To date, it is women who have to fill themselves with gadgets aimed at safeguarding beauty and youth.

This isn't about badmouthing makeup. It allows you to change your appearance, improve it, dress up and it must also be said, that whoever wears it looks better, feels better.[OBJECT]

They certainly don't use these kinds of gadgets, but resort to other tricks to attract.

We'll talk about makeup and hairstyling. They have varied over the centuries, according to the time and place, according to the material and economic conditions of each site and according to social ranks.

Some remains from prehistory suggest that animal and vegetable substances, combined with pigments, were useful for hiding from predators. But as the species was refined, so was the appearance we give to others.

The kajal-painted eyes of the Egyptian pharaohs and their women are an image that can give us an idea of how valuable physical appearance could be.

We have memories of this through paintings and sculptures, exclusive to the upper classes and that certainly embellished those enormous dark eyes.

Galena, lead and bismuth powders embellished the faces of Romans, Greeks and Turks. The eyebrows were fixed to look like one, the eyelashes were darkened.

Hence the stories of women who used rice powder mixed with bean powder to remove wrinkles. They left it overnight and in the morning they washed it off with donkey milk that was still lukewarm.

Make-ups such as those of the geishas in Japan or the tribes in Africa, have peculiar traditions and customs aimed at very specific purposes.

Elizabethan make-up in England preponderated paleness with various shades, like the Victorian, which praised a natural complexion and also white, fine, with marked blue veins.

Just to say something. Mexico had its own times naturally influenced by the fashions set in the world.

Make-up, an evolution from the hand of history

Along with the national tradition inherited from our indigenous blood, the dark and beautiful complexion, the black and shiny braids and the colorful clothing for the galas.

In La Laguna we have an impressive racial diversity. The arrival of people of various ethnic groups in this region led to exchanges that are seen on the street every day. From the dark complexion, through oriental features, to resoundingly light faces.

David Machado and Maricruz Campa run the D'Stylo academy, where they have served for more than 20 years.

They started as a family business with a small aesthetic of a chair and a mirror, in a profession that is known today as stylist, but has also had other names throughout history.

"Over time, my wife Maricruz told me that it would be a good idea to open an academy to train stylists."

"We wanted to create a trade that was self-sufficient for women. Over 10 years, over 600 women have gone through this academy," said David.

They have also been successful. Of every 40 graduates, around 30 set up their own business at home and the rest look for jobs in other aesthetics, in other salons.

This Sunday the 20th generation graduated with a parade, which is a kind of professional exam, because David commented, their programs are supervised by the SEP.

The show covered makeup and clothing trends from the 1920s to the present. A 100-year journey.

Precisely from the season in which the cosmetics sales business as such began to be and become what it already is.

Maricruz pointed out that indeed, the history of cosmetics has gone hand in hand with that of fashion. It is an almost indissoluble union.

Advances in the creation of articles to beautify the complexion of women and some men have been dizzying.

They go hand in hand with human history in these years, in which we have seen wars, revolutions, famines, all factors that converge in the appearance of people.

In the newspaper library of La Opinión, in one of the 1918 editions, an informative note was published in which it was discussed about the corset in the United States.

The first war was about to end and these items, which were of great use in the 1800s, could no longer be manufactured because all the metal production had to go to war equipment.

Among the beauty tips that the writers of that time proposed were keeping a clear, clean complexion and always having a good attitude, as well as taking care of oral hygiene.

"Mexico is a place with different climates, different roots, morphological characteristics, traits. In La Laguna we have wavy, thin, fragile hair. It fluffs up. We all want it straight because nobody wants curly hair," said Maricruz .

She added that in the 20 years that she has been working, there have been incredible developments. Simply each new generation demands more.

This requires preparation by teachers, who have to know what is up to date in fashion, designs, cuts, colors, trends. Also for this you must study and a lot.

He commented that they have a teaching manual, which has not become a formal book precisely because reality changes every day and everything changes with it. Even the ideals of physical beauty.

"Here we live in a region that we can say is desert. Skin adapts to the climate. That's why most of it is brown. White skin in our region is going to suffer a lot. We have to adapt to everything," she says.

They have students who graduated and went to the United States. Others have gone to the south of the country.

But for that, they are trained and can get the best out of each person. She warned against beauty charlatans, who are not going to care about the customer.

"In this career we have the virtue of being able to capture in a human being how beautiful he is and highlight his features."

[OBJECT]"It is a very nice profession, where we live with our clients and by getting the best out of them, we raise their self-esteem," he said.

The parade they had had a large audience. Young models were characterized according to the times and the aesthetic approaches that each time offered at the time, with the resources available.

Each of these looks as a manifestation of different times, for which we feel longing.

With or without makeup, what will remain of someone will always be what is inside. But it's fascinating to see how everything changes with a bit of colored powder on your face.

Today the make-up industry is millionaire. There are products such as the so-called CC cream that provide coverage, correct and hydrate at the same time.

Nail, hair and skin products are on hand in markets around the world. Something that the girls of the Elizabethan court would undoubtedly have appreciated.
