We are not going to tell you anything new: if you want to do your makeup correctly, get a good 'pack' of brushes. They are the basic tool to perform any type of makeup and achieve a professional finish. Of course, this task is more effective (and also more hygienic) if we care for the brushes properly.

The brushes are in contact with our skin, with our pimples, wounds and any imperfection that we may have. However, there are people who believe that it is not necessary to clean them if they are not used by anyone else. But that's how it is? We talk to those who really know.

Surely more than once you have regretted not cleaning that eyeshadow brush that has ended up painting all the colors except the one you want. But it is not the only problem that you will have to face if you do not clean your brushes. Daniel Marín, stylist, cosmetologist and director of Santum, makes it very clear to us: "Hygiene is essential in any aspect related to the body and face. And having a correct daily facial cleansing is not enough. Just as we clean our face every day, we have to do the same with our brushes.

"They are in constant contact with our skin, so having them dirty can cause it to become irritated or blackheads to appear more easily. And it doesn't matter if the same person always uses them: the brushes accumulate dirt and, what worse, bacteria. Putting on makeup with dirty brushes will cause the pores to clog, which will lead to the appearance of the dreaded blackheads and pimples," says the expert.

The brushes "accumulate product residues, oils and dirt that, together, create a perfect stage for the proliferation of bacteria that can cause reactions and irritation on the skin. Therefore, whether to apply powder makeup products , liquid or cream, it is vitally important to clean brushes or sponges at least once a week", adds María Pérez de Villaamil, director of CentroMem.

What happens if you do your makeup with a dirty brush?

We already know that brushes accumulate dirt and bacteria, but it turns out that applying makeup with a dirty brush also influences the finish of our makeup. "The fact of not cleaning them conditions the final result, since, by having traces of product in the fibers, they lose flexibility. Regarding the application, you will not get a uniform result of the makeup base on the skin," he points out. professional makeup artist Cristina Lobato.

In addition, the expert points out that "buying and investing in a good tool guarantees a good result but that it lasts a long time for the purchase to be profitable, it depends on daily care."

How often do you have to clean your brushes?

Brushes, whether for personal or professional use, should always be cleaned. Of course, the big difference is the assiduity. "In a professional job, they must be cleaned after each use and the same tool can never be used on two different people if it has not been cleaned before," the experts from the brand specialized in professional brushes Maiko Cosmetics explain to us.

"When the use of the brushes is personal, it is not necessary to clean them after each use, as long as it is a skin that does not have alterations or dermatological problems. Of course, it is advisable to clean the eye brushes after each use. I use it mainly to avoid product transfers from one make-up to another, especially if we are using dark products such as shadows or eyeliners," they add.

The situation changes if we have dermatological problems. "If we suffer from acne or other skin disorders, it is recommended to clean brushes after each use. What we can do is use alcohol-based cleaners after each use and do a deep cleaning with water and gel once a week or every 10 days, depending on how we use it," they recommend.
