Cajeput oil is obtained by distillation of leaves and twigs of trees such as Melaleuca cajuputi, Melaleuca quinquenervia or Malaleluca locadendra that belong to the myrtaceae family, such as eucalyptus.

Cajeput has a strong and pungent aroma that smells of turpentine (a solvent), resins and camphor.

The tree grows in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and other areas of the African continent. The name "cajeput" comes from its Indonesian name, "kayu putih" or "white wood."
