The Healthy Skin Foundation disassembles the bulls associated with dermatology

The skin is the most extensive organ of the human body and also the most exposed to factors that can alter or harm it.Therefore, to raise awareness about the need to protect it and avoid risks is one of the main missions of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV), and does so through the activities of the Healthy Skin Foundation. In the 48th Congress of the AEDV, which is held between December 1 and 3 in Bilbao, in addition to updating the latest scientific and clinical news for specialists, there is room to go to patients through several initiatives.

“As in previous years, within the framework of the activities of the Foundation, we will dedicate a session of the Congress to the patients. On this occasion we will talk about how to improve the medical-patient relationship and we will also disassemble bulos in dermatology, ”explains José CarlosDark, retired professor at the University of Córdoba and Honor President of the AEDV.At the first point, "we will comment on how the interview with the patient can be improved, because from there they derive from the satisfaction of the patient itself as adherence to the treatment and fulfillment of our indications," he says.Among the instruments for improvement, DR.Moreno highlights "humanization, empathy, active listening" and also "facilitate access to truthful information with reliable sources".

In the second part of the session, in charge of Salvio Serrano, Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Granada, doctors and patients will dismantle bulos and false beliefs, some deep -rooted.Moreno explains that "there are many false statements that circulate on social networks," some have persisted for years, such as "the belief that chocolate causes acne or that in the face of acne, no treatment must not be applied, which is best tonatural or supposedly natural, ”he says. There has even been the bulre that "acne is removed by marrying".Other bulos that will be analyzed are the one that qualifies as "poison" to the Botox or all those related to "miraculous" products and cures, for diseases such as psoriasis or for alopecia, in relation to which many false statements proliferate."It is a session dedicated to patients, but we also hope that dermatologists are attended, so that they are aware that these false beliefs exist," says Dr.Dark.

The change in habits in sun protection, objective achieved

"As in the issue of sun protection we have changed our habits, thanks also to Foundation campaigns as Euromelanoma, we have seen that young people are subjecting their health at a risk for not having enough information," says DR.Soto.

Precisely Euromelanoma is one of the emblematic campaigns of the Foundation that will also have an outstanding presence in Congress. With 21 years of history in Spain, during the pandemic he had to interrupt his face -to -face activity (the exploration of moles to the population to detect signs of possible skin tumors), but has continued active."In 2020 a literary contest was organized on social networks with the theme of moles and we had a very high participation, with thousands of contributions," says Buendía.With the 50 best poems and micro -stories, the Leather Healthy Foundation has edited `lunare stories', a book dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of prevention and self -exploration of the skin. The book, which can be acquired through the AEDV website, is also available at a 48th Congress stand.

In 2021 “we have also not been able.“We hope that in 2022 we can resume face -to -face activities, and also awareness in sports, business, etc..", Add.

“En los últimos años hemos querido llegar a grupos concretos de población, entre los que también se encuentran asociaciones de pacientes, población reclusa o empresas cuyos trabajadores, por su actividad, precisan precauciones adicionales para cuidar su piel”, detallaSoto.Among these projects, the dissemination and training about dermatological care in the prison, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, stands out.“Dermatologists go to prisons and give talks about skin care, burns prevention, tattoos problems, etc..Before the pandemic it was implemented in Madrid, and now the idea is to extend this program to prisons from all over Spain, ”says Buendía.

Other campaigns are those dedicated to dermatological health and sport and the ‘coexists with the sun’ initiative, dedicated to teacher training in photoprotection and healthy habits so that they transfer this information to the students."Let's not forget that the main risk factor of adult skin cancer is solar burns in childhood and adolescence," says Buendía.

Together with these projects, the Foundation directs those of solidarity dermatology, in which more than a hundred dermatologists from all over Spain are involved. These programs, such as those aimed at prevention of leprosy or the scabies epidemic in Malaui, also begin to start again after the pandemic break.
