Purpose detox: seven reasons to brush your skin (dry)

Yes, you read it right. You've probably heard the term 'dry brushing' in beauty and skincare circles as the ultimate treatment for radiant skin and cellulite reduction. But what is this practice really and what benefits does it have?

Dry brushing is a common skin care practice that has been used for centuries by societies around the world. And it's called that because it uses a dry brush to gently exfoliate your entire body by brushing it across the skin's surface in sideways or circular motions. Of course, everyone must take into account the type of skin and her preferences. Regardless, 'dry brushing' is gaining popularity and adherence in wellness circles for its physical and mental health benefits. A piece of advice: choose a vegetable fiber brush, of medium hardness to soft, with a handle long enough to reach the most difficult areas, such as your back.

Seven benefits of 'dry brushing'

Without a doubt, dry brushing the skin has obvious benefits. We name seven that will bring shine and smoothness to your skin, and health to your whole body.

1.Exfoliation. There are two ways to exfoliate the skin on the body and face: chemical and mechanical. Dry brushing falls into the mechanical category, just like a loofah or body scrub. Since dry brushing involves using the bristles of a brush to remove dead skin and does not implement any formulation or product, it is considered a mechanical exfoliation practice. Those who have very dry or sensitive skin, choose to add a few drops of oil.

2. Lymphatic stimulation. The lymphatic system throughout the body removes and processes toxins and regulates many normal functions. Lymphatic massage is a way to release trapped toxins, stimulate blood flow and boost energy, which is why some people claim that dry brushing can stimulate the lymphatic system because it puts pressure on various places in the body where the lymphatics are located.

3. Clean the pores. Both dry body brushing and dry face brushing can clear your pores of clogged, blackheads, and trapped sebum. You should use different brushes for each area, selecting a soft and sensitive brush for the face. Pores often appear larger and more open when they contain trapped dirt. Dry brushing can free this dirt from your pores, stimulate blood flow and make them appear smaller.

4. It can reduce cellulite. While this claim is anecdotal, there is a possibility that dry body brushing may help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite forms from the fibrous bands that connect the skin to the muscle and the fat cells that live between them. By stimulating blood flow through dry brushing, veins plump up and can temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite.

5. Softens the skin. We all love the feeling of smooth skin. Since dry brushing is a form of exfoliation, you can be sure that skin all over your body will reap the benefits of losing that tough outer layer.

6. Mentally relieve stress. This is an act of self-care because you are paying attention to your entire body and taking care of it through this ritual. You promote self-love while relieving stress with the practice of gently brushing your body.

7. Increase energy. Some claim to feel more energetic after dry brushing. This may be due in part to the stimulation of blood flow and the release of the lymphatic system. While the process isn't painful, it's definitely stimulating to the senses, especially when combined with a peppermint, tea tree, or citrus essential oil.
